School-Based Suicide Prevention
The ODMHSAS, in partnership with the Oklahoma State Department of Education, offers training and support to Oklahoma schools in a number of evidence-based suicide prevention practices, including training to identify and assist students in distress with appropriate referral, suicide intervention training for those interacting with high risk populations, and postvention training and support to foster healing after a suicide loss and ensure a supportive reintegration for students following a suicide crisis.
Effective July 1, 2021 all Oklahoma schools must provide suicide prevention training to teachers and staff. The following training programs meet this requirement:

SB21 relates to suicide awareness and drug abuse policies. It requires school district boards of education to adopt policy and train staff in suicide prevention initiatives.
SB 21 goes into effect during the 2021-2022 school year. Suicide prevention training must be renewed every other school year.
Eligible trainings are determined by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS). Trainings are offered free of charge and may be coordinated between school districts and ODMHSAS.
