TEFAP and CSFP
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federally funded food distribution program administered through the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (USDA/FNS). TEFAP helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with the emergency food and nutrition assistance at no cost, through food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens. TEFAP Program regulations are available at https://www.fns.usda.gov/tefap/emergency-food-assistance-program.
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of elderly people, at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. It provides food and administrative funds to States to supplement the diets of this group. CSFP food packages do not provide a complete diet, but rather are a good source of nutrients typically lacking in the diets of the target population. Food packages include a variety of foods, such as nonfat dry and ultra-high temperature fluid milk, juice, cereal, noodles, peanut butter, canned meat or poultry or fish, canned fruits and vegetables. CSFP regulations are available at https://www.fns.usda.gov/csfp/commodity-supplemental-food-program.
