Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)
The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is an ongoing, statewide study that asks mothers about their health and pregnancy experiences. PRAMS is a joint research project between the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Oklahoma has been a PRAMS participant since the CDC project began in 1987 and has collected survey data since 1988.
The purpose is to learn why some babies are born healthy while others are not. Every mother has unique experiences, and many things in life may affect a pregnancy. We also know moms can do everything right but still have problems with their pregnancy. This survey helps us get an overall picture of pregnancies and births in Oklahoma. By moms sharing their stories, they can help other mothers and babies. All information is kept confidential, and PRAMS follows strict rules about privacy.
Oklahoma uses the information to help health professionals improve care, provide a way to develop and measure health programs, guide better use of resources, and help mothers learn more about health before, during, and shortly after pregnancy. A computer randomly picks around 250 women from the Oklahoma Birth Certificate Registry each month to answer the PRAMS questions. All answers are important to help us learn ways to improve the health of Oklahoma mothers and babies.

Oklahoma PRAMS data are available to researchers through completing the Oklahoma PRAMS Automated Research File (ARF) Application. Oklahoma provides a modified version of the PRAMS Automated Research File. The process is outlined below.
- Complete and submit the Oklahoma PRAMS Automated Research File (ARF) Application. Follow the prompts to select the datasets you wish to use.
- You must consent to the Oklahoma PRAMS Data Use Agreement (DUA) form found at the end of the ARF application. This agreement is a required part of the data-sharing process and has specific requirements for acknowledging Oklahoma PRAMS in all oral or written presentations of the analysis results.
- Oklahoma’s available codebooks can be viewed by phase and downloaded from within the application. Available codebooks include:
- Phase 8 Codebooks (2016-2021) – COVID-19 vaccine supplement available; years 2019 and 2020 excluded
- Phase 7 Codebooks (2012-2015)
- Phase 6 Codebooks (2009-2011) – flu supplement available
- You will receive an email within two weeks about whether the application has been approved.
- If approved, the email will contain the requested datasets and supporting documents. A separate email with passcodes for the datasets will also be sent.
Oklahoma PRAMS collects data on topics such as:
- Breastfeeding and pumped milk feeding
- Contraception
- Discrimination
- Infant sleep environment
- Maternal vaccinations
- Mental health
- Social support
- Tobacco and marijuana use
- And more
