  • In 2012, one in every ten Oklahoma adults 18 years and older (292,000 people) reported they currently had asthma.
  • Females are diagnosed with asthma almost twice as much as males.
  • Oklahoma's asthma mortality rates are similar to the nation's, which has been decreasing in recent years. Non-Hispanic Multiracial individuals have much higher asthma rates than other racial groups.

  • Boys are diagnosed more frequently with asthma than girls.

The Chronic Disease Service is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop asthma control plans which include disease tracking, science-based interventions, and state-wide partnerships to reduce the burden of asthma in the home, school, and occupational environments.

Current projects include:

  • How to Use an Inhaler (Video);
  • Asthma Friendly Schools (incorporates two components - Asthma Basic, for teachers, and Open Airways for Schools, for students, in partnership with the local American Lung Association); and
  • Ready, Set, Go with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, AAFA, (for primary care providers).
