Drug Overdose Data Dashboard

This dashboard displays the most recent information on fatal and nonfatal drug overdoses in Oklahoma. Information includes counts, rates, proportions, trends, and demographic information.

Death data include unintentional fatal drug overdoses that occurred in Oklahoma. Out of state residents who died in Oklahoma and Oklahoma residents who died in another state are excluded.

Discharge data include nonfatal drug overdose hospital discharges of all intents (intentional self-harm, unintentional, and undetermined). Out of state residents who were hospitalized in Oklahoma and Oklahoma residents who were hospitalized in another state are excluded.

When hovering over a county on the map, the tooltip displays county name, number of deaths or hospitalizations, and death or hospitalization rates. Rates are calculated for 5 or more deaths and 10 or more discharges. Data are suppressed for <5 deaths and <10 discharges to prevent identification of individuals and are indicated with an asterisk (*). Some rates are based on a small number of cases and should be interpreted with caution.

Rates are expressed per 100,000 population. The population (denominator) data used to compute rates were produced by the U.S Census Bureau and were obtained from CDC WONDER. The rates have not been adjusted for age.

Data sources:
Death data: OSDH Injury Prevention Service (IPS), Fatal Unintentional Poisoning Surveillance System.

Nonfatal drug overdose
Nonfatal drug overdose hospital discharges of all intents with ICD-10-CM codes listed in the primary or secondary diagnoses fields: T36-T50 that have a 6th character indicating unintentional, intentional self-harm, assault, or undetermined intent (except for T36.9, T37.9, T39.9, T41.4, T42.7, T43.9, T45.9, T47.9, and T49.9 where the 5th character indicates unintentional, intentional self-harm, assault, and undetermined intent) and a 7th character indicating an initial encounter. This dashboard represents the most up-to-date data that the IPS has available and will be updated when new data are available. If you have any questions regarding the information shown on the dashboard or have any feedback, please let us know by email: injury@health.ok.gov or by phone: 405-426-8440.

The dashboard includes two pages, Fatal Drug Overdose (Page 1) and Nonfatal Drug Overdose (Page 2). To navigate to the desired page, click on the page navigation buttons on the top right of the dashboard or click the arrow at the bottom center of the page. To view the dashboard in a separate window, click on the "Open in new window" button in the bottom-right corner.

By default, the data displayed on each page are for the State of Oklahoma for all substances involved. However, data can be filtered by type of substance involved, OSDH district/county of residence, sex, age group, and race/ethnicity.

Select a substance involved in the overdose on the left side of each page.

Below the “Substance” tile, select OSDH district or county of residence. Click the arrow to the left of each district to show or hide county names. When a district is selected, the data displayed are for the overall district. Multiple districts and counties can be selected at a time.

Below the page navigation tabs on the top right, select sex, age group, or race/ethnicity to filter data by those variables.

Data can also be filtered by clicking on each visual. For example, click Oklahoma County on the map to display data on other visuals for Oklahoma County. The highlighted portions represent Oklahoma County. Multiple values on the visuals can also be selected by ctrl+select.

Click on the “Reset Visuals” button on the top right to clear all selections and return to the default display.
