Statistical Research Unit

Making Oklahoma's workplaces safer, one data point at a time.

The Statistical Research Unit of the Oklahoma Department of Labor plays a vital role in ensuring workplace safety through comprehensive data collection and analysis. Here's how our data makes a difference:

Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI)

Under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), our unit conducts the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). This annual census provides crucial data on work-related injury fatalities in Oklahoma, which is then combined with data from other states to create a national overview. These statistics are indispensable for both state and federal OSHA programs, helping to:

  • Improve program efficiency
  • Enhance worker safety and health in Oklahoma
  • Target safety inspections based on public sector data, maximizing the use of state resources for the greatest statewide benefit

Public Sector Occupational Injury and Illness Survey

We also conduct an annual public sector occupational injury and illness survey. This survey provides comparative data that highlights the safety program needs across various industries and government levels in Oklahoma, including state, county, and municipal.

Survey of Occupational Injuries & Illnesses (SOII)

Our collaboration with the BLS extends to the Survey of Occupational Injuries & Illnesses (SOII), one of the most comprehensive counts of non-fatal, work-related injuries and illnesses in the United States. By categorizing establishments by location, industry, and size, we ensure an accurate representation that benefits all participating states. The SOII data helps us:

  • Identify circumstances and patterns of work-related injuries
  • Develop safety training and educational materials
  • Create industry-standard safety practices
  • Enable employers and states to compare their injury and illness rates against national averages
  • Facilitate and improve academic research on workplace safety and health

Making a Safer Oklahoma

Our data collection efforts are crucial to the mission of the Oklahoma Department of Labor: ensuring Oklahoma is a safe and healthy place to live and work. The insights gained from our surveys and censuses help create safer work environments and inform the development of policies and programs that protect workers.
